The core idea for this final project originated in a desire to (re)create a natural environment through artificial means. Individual opinions differed on  the approach; as a class, we worked to integrate separate ideas into one collective project. The decision to work with money came from economic situations in the aftermath of the 2011 Occupy Wall Street movement—with demonstrations voicing financial disquietude around the globe, money seemed a theme that touched everyone’s lives. Integrated with umbrellas, the financial turmoil turned into a storm.

Each student designed her own currency & hand-printed each bill on a Vandercook press with various papers & color inks. This let each person express her own artistic license while unifying the piece under one central motif.

With special thanks to Katherine Ruffin, David Olsen, Lyn Turbak, a lasercutter + a late night session,
and a lovely vintage Vandercook press

Eye of the Storm
If only money were really raining from
the heavens...

Eye of the Storm is the final project & cumulative effort of a semester's worth of teamwork between six members of a studio-based art seminar. Together, we explored different collaborative working practices using both traditional and new media techniques.
